Electrical Safety
Each year, around 1,000 electrical‑related workplace incidents are reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), with approximately 30 resulting in fatal injuries. Our Electrical Safety course helps employees recognise electrical hazards and follow safe systems of work to reduce the risk of accidents.
Description
Our IOSH‑approved and CPD‑accredited Electrical Safety Training is designed for employees who use electrical equipment or carry out, supervise, or plan electrical work. The course helps employers meet their legal obligations under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
Course Aims
By the end of the Electrical Safety Training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the legal responsibilities of both employers and employees under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
- Explain how electricity can affect the human body and the potential consequences of exposure.
- Identify common hazards associated with electrical equipment and electrical systems.
- Describe the control measures and safe working practices that can be used to reduce the risk of electrical injury.
Course Overview
1. Introduction
- An overview of workplace statistics showing how frequently electrical accidents occur.
- A discussion of the most common causes of electrical incidents in the workplace.
2. Regulations and duties
- An explanation of the responsibilities of employers, employees, and other duty holders under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
- How these duties help ensure electrical systems are used and maintained safely.
3. What electricity is and how it affects the body
- An introduction to basic electrical principles, including conductors and insulators, and the meaning of current, voltage, and resistance.
- How exposure to electricity can affect the body, including electrical burns and secondary injuries such as falls or impact injuries.
4. Electrical hazards
- Common electrical hazards found in the workplace, including faulty equipment, damaged cables and extension leads, excavation and digging risks, electrical arcing, rapid discharge, and battery‑related hazards.
5. Working with live electricity
- Guidance on safe working practices when live electrical work cannot be avoided.
- The importance of limiting voltage supplies and when residual current devices (RCDs) must be used.
- The role of risk assessments, authorisation procedures, and adherence to safe systems of work.
6. Maintenance
- Electrical system components that require regular maintenance, including portable electrical equipment, plugs and connectors, double‑insulated items, light fittings, cables, and equipment used in potentially flammable environments.
- Why routine inspection, testing, and record‑keeping are essential.
- Examples of basic visual and functional checks that should be carried out regularly.
7. Power cables, power lines, and batteries
- Precautions to take when planning excavation work.
- Safe working practices when operating near overhead power lines.
- Key safety considerations when using 12‑volt DC batteries.
FAQS
Does the Electrical Safety course include practical content or is it purely theoretical?
The course uses practical examples and realistic scenarios to demonstrate key electrical safety principles. This approach helps participants understand how to apply safe working practices when dealing with electrical equipment in a range of work environments.
Can the online Electrical Safety training be tailored to our organisation?
Yes. While the core course covers essential electrical safety topics relevant to most workplaces, bespoke options are available. Training can be adapted to reflect specific risks, procedures, or electrical work activities within your organisation.
Is this course suitable for employees with no electrical background?
Yes. The training is designed to be accessible to learners with little or no prior electrical knowledge, as well as those with some experience. Concepts are explained clearly and supported with visual content to aid understanding.
What support is available if I experience issues with the course?
We provide full technical support to ensure a smooth learning experience, whether the course is accessed through the SHINE platform or integrated into your own learning management system (LMS). Our customer support team is also available to answer any questions relating to course content or compliance.
Are discounts available for training large teams?
