2. Selecting the correct abrasive wheel

Guidance on choosing the most suitable abrasive wheel based on the nature of the work, the material being processed, and the specifications of the equipment. Learners will explore how factors such as grit size, bonding type, and maximum operating speed influence safe and effective use.

3. Abrasive wheel hazards and safety

An examination of the risks associated with abrasive wheel use, including wheel failure, flying particles, incorrect fitting, fire hazards, dust and fume exposure, excessive noise, and vibration-related health issues. The section outlines key control measures to help reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

4. Roles and responsibilities

An overview of legal duties under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). This includes employer responsibilities such as risk assessment, equipment maintenance, and training provision, as well as employee duties to follow safe systems of work and report defects or hazards.

5. Safe working practices

A practical focus on the safe handling, inspection, and testing of abrasive wheels prior to use. Learners will cover correct mounting and securing procedures, appropriate storage methods, and the use of safety controls such as machine guards and suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

FAQS

The course is designed to support understanding, using interactive content and knowledge checks throughout to help reinforce key learning points.

Is online abrasive wheels training as effective as face‑to‑face training?
The online course is designed to support and reinforce practical, hands‑on instruction. It covers the safe use, handling, and care of abrasive wheels and is aligned with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance. Built‑in assessments are included to check understanding and reinforce key safety principles.

How does this course help reduce workplace accidents?
The training highlights common risks such as incorrect wheel selection, poor installation, and wheel failure. It teaches employees how to identify hazards, select suitable abrasive wheels, carry out safety checks, and apply safe working practices, helping to lower the risk of incidents and injuries.
