Course Overview

Module 1 – Reviewing the Fundamentals

This module revisits key concepts from previous training, including legal requirements and a manager’s responsibilities for maintaining a safe workplace. Learners will refresh their understanding of hazards, risks, risk assessments, control measures, and incident management. It also covers the core elements of effective health and safety management systems, such as policy development, planning, implementation, performance measurement, and ongoing review.

Module 2 – Leadership in Health and Safety

This section focuses on the importance of strong leadership in driving positive health and safety outcomes. Learners will explore how leadership behaviour influences workplace culture, employee attitudes, and overall safety performance. The module also highlights the qualities of effective leaders and how they contribute to creating and maintaining a strong safety culture.

Module 3 – Planning for Safety

Participants will review how to develop and implement effective health and safety policies. This includes setting clear objectives, defining procedures, and allocating appropriate resources. The module also provides an update on current legislation and standards, ensuring managers understand their responsibilities, along with guidance on where to access reliable health and safety information and support.

Module 4 – Implementing Controls

This module explores how to identify workplace risks and apply appropriate controls. It covers risk profiling, conducting assessments, and prioritising actions to manage hazards effectively. Learners will revisit the stages of risk assessment, from identifying hazards through to evaluating risks and communicating findings. The module also introduces practical control strategies, including the hierarchy of controls, engineering solutions, administrative measures, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Module 5 – Monitoring Performance

Learners will examine different ways to track and measure health and safety performance. This includes using data such as accident statistics, near-miss reports, and audit results. The module also explains the difference between proactive monitoring (e.g. inspections and observations) and reactive monitoring (e.g. incident investigations). In addition, it outlines the audit process, including planning, carrying out audits, reviewing outcomes, and implementing improvements.

Module 6 – Driving Continuous Improvement

This final module highlights the importance of reviewing performance data and identifying trends to support ongoing improvement. Learners will explore how organisations can learn from incidents, near misses, and audit findings. The focus is on taking corrective and preventative action to strengthen systems and continuously improve health and safety standards.
