Designed as a benchmark qualification in workplace health and safety, IOSH Managing Safely is ideal for business owners, managers, supervisors and team leaders in any sector. The course provides a comprehensive understanding of key health and safety principles, including leadership responsibilities, risk identification and control, and effective incident investigation techniques.

To complete the IOSH Managing Safely course, learners are required to pass both an online assessment and a practical risk assessment project. These are included within the course fee, with no additional costs.

Online Assessment

• Consists of 30 multiple-choice questions based on the course content.
• Completed remotely online, so there is no need to attend a training venue.
• The time limit is 45 minutes, with a pass mark of 36 out of 60.
• Learners are given two attempts to pass; if unsuccessful, the course must be retaken in full.

Practical Risk Assessment

• Involves carrying out a risk assessment in a workplace or another familiar environment.
• Demonstrates the ability to identify hazards, evaluate risks and suggest appropriate control measures.
• Submitted online (via email) to IOSH-approved assessors for marking.

A structured three-page template is provided:

• Page 1: Overview details and scope of the assessment
• Page 2: Completed risk assessment
• Page 3: Guidance notes

Learners may submit draft versions to receive tutor feedback before final submission.
A minimum score of 23 out of 38 is required to achieve a pass.

Courses that have not been assigned to a learner will expire 12 months after purchase. Once a course place has been allocated, access remains available for 190 days or until the course is completed—whichever comes first.

Once the course has been successfully completed, learners will receive a digital IOSH Managing Safely certificate.

Module 1 – Introduction to Managing Safely

• Explore the moral, legal and financial reasons for effective health and safety management.
• Understand the role of managers and their responsibility for maintaining a safe workplace.

Module 2 – Risk Assessment

• Learn key terminology such as hazard, risk, likelihood, consequence and hazardous event.
• Understand the purpose of a risk assessment and the five-step approach to completing one.
• Apply a risk rating system to assess and prioritise hazards.
• Recognise how risk assessment helps prevent incidents and improve workplace safety.

Module 3 – Risk Control

• Understand the meaning of “reasonably practicable” when implementing control measures.
• Learn how to use a risk matrix alongside the hierarchy of control.
• Explore how control measures reduce either the likelihood or impact of incidents.
• Understand residual risk and its importance in ongoing risk management.

Module 4 – Responsibilities

• Learn about legal requirements for protecting employees and others affected by work activities.
• Understand the meaning of “reasonably foreseeable” using industry knowledge and experience.
• Identify the differences between civil and criminal law in relation to health and safety.
• Recognise the consequences of failing to meet legal requirements and where to seek guidance.
• Explore the structure and benefits of effective health and safety management systems.
• Understand the critical role leadership plays in maintaining safe practices.

Module 5 – Hazard Awareness

• Identify the main categories of hazards and how they may overlap.
• Explore a wide range of common workplace hazards, along with their effects and controls, including:

  • Stress and mental health
  • Fire risks
  • Hazardous substances
  • Working at height
  • Electrical safety
  • Noise and vibration
